Tiger baseball: Unfinished Business
By Doug Quinn 02/28/2007
For nearly 10 months, there's been a gnawing in Shannon Dobson's belly.
The Broken Arrow High School baseball coach remembers, all too clearly, that
chilly May 4th night.
That's when the Tigers, one game from the Class 6A state tournament, were
swept - at home - by Bartlesville in the regional final.
"There's no doubt, we should have won one of those," Dobson said. "We
should have played in the state tournament.
"We remember, but it's not the focal point of our season. It's probably helped us
work a little harder to get better."
Perhaps, that could be the catalyst this season, which begins Thursday at
4 p.m. when the Tigers host Cascia Hall.
BAHS could be armed to take that step - if not further.
The Tigers return no fewer than seven starters with a power-punch offense.
Those seven - Andy Wilkins, Ky Burgess, Adam Johnston, Spencer Barnett,
Kyle Henry, John Swyden, Justin Rackleff and Cale Replogle - had a combined
.357 (250-of-700) batting average.
As a team last year, Broken Arrow batted .342.
"We've got the capability to score a lot of runs," Dobson said.
Defensively, Wilkins can play first or third base, Barnett is a shortstop, Henry a
second baseman, Johnston plays first and Burgess catches and plays outfield.
Replogle is gaining ground at second base and Rackleff is capable of taking
over at first base.
"A positive is versatility," Dobson said. "A number of the guys can play different
positions."
Pitching is the age-old question.
"You always need arms," Dobson said.
BAHS has six hurlers - Johnston, Brett Ziegler, Lance Rymel, Morgan Croft,
Chris Gardner and John Michael Moore - with varied varsity experience.
"We have some numbers," Dobson said. "We'll need somebody to step up and
be the go-to guy."
Mound help could come from newcomers Derek Edmisten and Nathan Pettus
and program players like Kevin LeMoine, Morgan Croft and Sam Moses.
Postion-wise, Derek Williams and Marcus Terry could expand their roles into the
outfield while J.D. Wood and Mitchell Osburn are backup catchers.
