BAHS Baseball: Rymel tosses no-hitter

Lance Rymel wasn't supposed to pitch the entire game.

But, the senior spoiled Broken Arrow High School coach
                                              Shannon Dobson's good intentions Thursday.

"I wanted to throw three or four guys," Dobson said.

                                              Instead, Rymel got on a roll for a no-hitter in a 10-0,
five-inning run-rule of Tulsa Memorial at Tiger Field.

"Lance had his pitch-count down and then we realized
he had a chance at a no-hitter," Dobson said. "We
decided to let him go for it."

Striking out seven, Rymel allowed only three base
runners - both hit by pitches in the first two innings.

"Those were two inside pitches that got away," Rymel
said. "I let go of them too early."

He retired eight Chargers in a row before an error
snapped the streak in the fourth inning.

Of his seven strikeouts, five of those came in the last two innings.

Rymel was credited with four strikeouts in the fourth, set up by the error.

"I was bearing down the last three innings," Rymel said.
"I was getting a little tired but I had good velocity and hit my spots."

It was 5-2 Broken Arrow's fourth straight victory after a 1-2 start.

"I like this club," Dobson said. "We have depth, pretty good pitching and can hit. If we
play like we're capable, we can beat anybody."

BAHS's rocky start was due to a shaky defense.

Five errors in a 4-3, eight-inning loss to Union that dipped the record under .500.

"We're playing better defense and that's a big reason," third baseman Andy Wilkins
said. "Plus, we're hitting the ball better."

Wilkins had a wind-aided, three-run homer in the first inning.

"On a normal day," Wilkins said, smiling, "that would have been a pop up."
Instead, a gusty north wind was the difference.

"He (Memorial left fielder Antony Castorena) was camped under the ball," Wilkins
said. "But the ball kept carrying."

Wilkins had an RBI double in the fourth inning while Ky Burgess delivered a two-run
single in the second.
