John Swyden is best known for his speed on the Broken Arrow High School baseball team.
Stealing bases, flagging down fly-balls in center field and slapping singles and doubles
are the senior's trademarks.
He added home-run hitter to his resume Tuesday during the Sunrise Mountain Festival in
Phoenix, Ariz.
Swyden belted a three-run homer that carried BAHS to a come-from-behind, 11-5 victory
over Notre Dame.
His first homer of the season ignited a seven-run seventh-inning as the Tigers won their
pool with a 4-0 record.
Earlier in the day, the Tigers (9-2 and winners of eight straight) beat Arizona's Willow
Canyon, 10-4.
The spring break tournament moved into bracket play Wednesday with BAHS facing
Mountain Ridge in a semifinal with the winner playing an evening game for the
championship.
Swyden's homer came after Spencer Barnett reached on an error and Marcus Terry
bunted safely to erase a 5-4 deficit.
Consecutive singles by Andy Wilkins, Adam Johnston and Nathan Pettus loaded the bases
when pitcher Lance Rymel delivered a two-run double.
Rymel went the distance to raise his record to 3-0 with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Against Willow Canyon, Wilkins, Terry and Rymel were 3-for-4 in a 13-hit barrage.
