BAHS wins two in Tiger-Trojan Classic
By:Doug Quinn

Broken Arrow High School may have tipped
its hand Friday afternoon.
But that was OK with coach Shannon Dobson
after the Tigers' run-ruled Edmond Santa Fe,
11-2, in the Tiger-Trojan Classic.
BAHS banged out 15 hits - eight for extra bases,
including three home runs - and Nathan Pettus
pitched the full five innings.
"We beat one of the better teams on that side of
the state," Dobson said of the Wolves, now 9-3.
"We played to the level of our competition.
"When we come ready to play, we can do a lot
of good things."
Three days earlier, the Tigers bested Stillwater,
5-2, in an unemotional outing, something that
didn't set well with Dobson.
"We played well today," he said. "Now, we've got to do this consistently."
In a later game, the Tigers (13-3) rallied in the late innings for a 10-7 victory over Joplin, Mo.
Senior third baseman Andy Wilkins went 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles.
"That's what Andy is supposed to do," Dobson said, cracking a smile.
Wilkins' fourth homer of the season came in the first inning and that was the first of three
runs scored by the Arkansas signee.
"I felt good and had a good rhythm at the plate," Wilkins said.
Wilkins deflected the personal achievement.
"We were ready to play," Wilkins said. "It's a real good feeling when we roll as a team."
Catcher Ky Burgess cracked his first homer of the season, a two-run job in the midst of an
eight-run third inning.
"I didn't think it was going out," Burgess said. "I figured it was lazy flyball but it kept carrying.
"It was nice to get that first one. It takes some of the pressure off."
John Swyden had his second homer of the season, a solo shot in that third inning.
In the third, the Tigers chased Santa Fe starter and loser Ryan Wagner by sending 13
batters to the plate.
Including the Burgess and Swyden homers, BAHS had 10 hits in the frame with two doubles
by Wilkins and two-batters by Pettus, Lance Rymel and
Derec Williams.
Pettus (4-0) gave up a first-inning homer to Santa Fe catcher Josh Rosecrans and an
unearned run in the second.
Over the last three innings, only two Wolves reached base and both by walks.

There must be magic in an old Andy Wilkins hat for BAHS lefthander Brett Ziegler.
Ziegler, who forgotten his ballcap Friday, borrowed a well-worn head cover from the Tiger
third baseman and it worked like a charm.
Throwing 5 1/3 innings of relief, Ziegler calmed stormy waters after the Eagles had taken a
5-4 lead after the second inning.
Ziegler struckout seven and allowed only four hits and two runs to earn the victory.
"Yeah," Ziegler said, smiling, "thanks to Andy's hat."
Ziegler spelled Tiger starter Drew Edmisten with two outs and two on in the second.
He got the first Eagle batter to groundout to end the frame.
"I knew if I got that out, things would be fine," Ziegler said after his longest outing this season.
BAHS, the visiting team for both games, scored three runs in the fifth inning to regain the
lead.
John Swyden's leadoff homer tied the game while Lance Rymel and Spencer Barnett had
RBI singles.
The Tigers gave Ziegler a 9-5 cushion in the top of the sixth on a RBI double by Wilkins and
a sacrifice fly by Adam Johnston.
