Wilkins homers twice as Tigers improve to 22-8
It was a regular season game.
For Broken Arrow High School, there was a playoff urgency.
If the Tigers are looking for momentum, they may have gotten the ball rolling Thursday night.
Pounding out 10 hits - including a pair of two-run homers by Andy Wilkins - BAHS knocked off
Bartlesville, 10-6, behind Nathan Pettus' solid relief pitching.
This was the first of three games in as many days to close out the regular season.
BAHS (22-8) plays Friday at 4 p.m. at Muskogee and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Union before
hosting a Class 6A regional Tuesday.
"Except for one rough inning, we played pretty solid," BAHS assistant coach Jimmy Ashley said.
"Right now, we're trying to stay focused and get on a roll."
Going 3-for-3, Wilkins belted a two-run homer in the third, matched that in the sixth and had a
sacrifice fly.
Ky Burgess doubled twice and Lance Rymel had a two-run double and three RBIs.
Rymel started on the mound but ran ashore in the third inning when the Bruins rocked the
right-hander with a grand slam.
The junior, on a 50-pitch limit, walked and hit two Bartlesville batters to set the table for the
grand slam that put the Bruins in front, 6-4.
Pettus (5-3) pitched the last four innings and allowed the Bruins one run on two hits on eight
strike outs and one walk.
"We had decided they (Rymel and Pettus) were going to split time," Ashley said. "Lance got his
pitch-count just a little quicker."
Wilkins pulled BAHS even at 6-6 in the fifth after Marcus Terry was hit by a pitch.
The Tigers regained the lead, 7-6, in the sixth on a two out double by Cale Replogle.
In the seventh, Pettus helped himself in a three-run surge with an RBI single to score Wilkins,
who had doubled.
Rymel then doubled home Burgess, who had been hit with a pitch, and Pettus.
