BAHS enters postseason with 24-8 record

Broken Arrow High School's baseball team appears to be on a roll at just the right time.

The Tigers finished regular-season action Saturday night by hanging on for an 8-7 victory
against Frontier Conference foe and two-time defending state champion Union on the
Redskins' home diamond.

The victory gives Broken Arrow (24-8) a three-game winning streak as the Tigers enter
postseason action on Tuesday.

The Tigers host a Class 6A regional, which features Putnam City, Sapulpa and Tulsa
Memorial.

"Any time you go into postseason play, you want to go in on a roll," BAHS coach Shannon
Dobson said.

"When you defeat a quality team, such as Union, you hope that it can carry over (to the
postseason)."

With righthander Derek Edmisten (4-1) on the mound and an opportunistic offense, Broken
Arrow made matters look easy in the early going against Union (24-4).

Edmisten allowed just three hits in the first four innings while his teammates notched a pair
of runs in the third inning and four more in the fifth - all coming with two out - as the Tigers
claimed a seemingly comfortable 6-0 lead.

John Swyden plated two runs with an RBI single and a run-scoring double while Cale
Replogle tallied a pair of runs to help BAHS grab its six-run cushion.

All six runs came off Union righthander Drew Rucinski (6-2), who entered the game with a
nifty 1.47 earned run average.

But the Redskins showed why they have claimed the last two Class 6A crowns.

Union scored three times off Edmisten in the fifth inning to trim its six-run deficit in half.

Then, after Broken Arrow moved in front 8-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth, the Redskins
tallied four more in their half of the sixth inning, to make it a one-run contest.

"Any time you play a team like Union, Owasso or Jenks, you know they are not going to be
out of a game even if they fall behind early," Dobson said. "Union climbed back into the
game.

"But, to our credit, we were able to able to answer a couple of times."

The deciding runs for BAHS came in the sixth inning off Redskin reliever Chase Webb, who
took over for Rucinski in the fifth.

A leadoff double by Spencer Barnett, followed by Replogle's sacrifice bunt, preceded a
run-scoring single by Marcus Terry.

After a walk to Swyden, Terry scored what would prove to be the game-wining run on Andy
Wilkins' single to center field. Wilkins and Terry each registered two RBI.

Righthander Nate Pettus pitched the final inning for Broken Arrow.

Pettus struck out the side to pick up his second save of the season despite allowing a
one-out double.

"Nate has a closer's mentality," Dobson said. "He's shown he can be someone for us to go
to in those situations."

For Pettus, the chance to close out the game on the mound came after he had committed
an error at shortstop that led to two Union unearned runs in the sixth inning.

"It was a chance to redeem myself," Pettus said. "So I had a little more of an attitude to throw
harder.

"I wanted to come in and shut them down."
